CASA DE TAOS

This Rammed Earth home is a work in progress in Taos, New Mexico.

Although this construction process dates back several thousand years, the method with its layers of rich colors and textures, is being revived by architects who are bringing it into the 21st century with advanced mixes and innovative technology.  Rammed earth construction is the process of ramming a mixture of aggregates, like gravel, sand, silt, and earthen clay into a formwork to create walls.

When the earth is dry the formwork is removed to reveal solid monolithic walls. Known for their earthy-toned striations, todays rammed earth construction is an architectural form that is thermally insulated with high performance rigid insulation in the core.
